Cyproterone and Ethinylestradiol are combined in this medicine.
Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol is used to treat hormone-dependent acne or hirsutism (excessive growth of facial or body hair) in women of reproductive age who desire an oral contraceptive (birth control pill) to prevent pregnancy.
This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You make take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
If you missed a dose and it is within 12 hours of your usual schedule, take the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
If you are more than 12 hours late, skip the missed dose (discard the unused tablet) and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- current or previous breast cancer
- unexplained vaginal bleeding
- liver disease e.g. liver tumour
- inflammation of the pancreas
- blood clot formation e.g. deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in your leg veins), pulmonary embolism (blood clots in a lung artery), recent heart attack or stroke
- serious risk factors for blood clot formation e.g. uncontrolled high blood pressure, migraine
as Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol may not be suitable for you.
Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while on Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol therapy, alert your doctor immediately. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child.
Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with this medicine.
Do not take Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol with medicines used to treat hepatitis C. Please see the section “Can I take this with other medicines?” below for more information.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- risk factors for heart disease e.g. high cholesterol or triglyceride levels
- systemic lupus erythematosus (an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation)
- diabetes
- kidney disease
- hereditary angioedema (swelling of the limbs, face or airways)
- depression
- history of chloasma gravidarum (discolouration of the skin especially on the face or neck during pregnancy)
- porphyria (an inherited disorder that causes skin or nervous system abnormalities)
- gallstone (abnormal stone-like mass formation in the gall bladder)
- sickle cell anaemia (low red blood cell count in the body)
- inflammation of the bowel
- other risk factors for blood clot formation e.g. obesity, prolonged immobilisation, smoking, family history of blood clot disorder
Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol does not lower the risk of getting HIV infection or any other sexually transmitted diseases. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid getting these diseases.
If you are going for an operation or certain laboratory tests (e.g. liver and thyroid function tests), inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- Pregnancy tests must be done before treatment to know if this medicine is suited for you to take.
- Routine tests for liver function, sugar, and cholesterol levels may be done while you are being treated with this medicine.
- Your blood pressure may rise to unsafe levels without you noticing it. Monitor your blood pressure before and during treatment.
- Regular monitoring for signs of depression, skin reactions and changes in vision may also be needed.
Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
If you smoke, you should try to quit. Smoking is harmful to your blood pressure, heart and overall health. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about ways to kick your smoking habit.
Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol may cause any of the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, weight gain or weight loss, decreased sex drive, altered mood, breast pain and tenderness, vaginal bleeding between periods, absence of menstrual period, vaginal discharge, rash, and itching.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- shortness of breath and chest pain
- pain, swelling and tenderness in your leg accompanied by redness and warmth
- slurring or trouble speaking with loss of vision
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Cyproterone + Ethinylestradiol with medicines used in hepatitis C combination therapy that includes ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or using any of these medicines:
- other medicines to treat viral infection e.g. nevirapine
- medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. phenytoin, lamotrigine
- medicines to treat TB (lung infection known as tuberculosis) e.g. rifampicin
- medicines for fungal infection e.g. ketoconazole
- etoricoxib (medicines for pain and inflammation)
- certain antibiotics e.g. erythromycin
- ciclosporin (medicine used in organ transplant or certain immune diseases)
- theophylline (asthma medicine)
- tizanidine (muscle relaxant)
- St. John’s wort (herbal medicine)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Cyproteronoe + Ethinylestradiol.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicine, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Protect from light.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
